Interview with Author Denise Verrico

Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I had the honour of reading and reviewing Denise Verrico's first three book in the Immortyl Revolution series : Cara Mia, Twilight of the Gods and My Fearful Symmetry. (Click on the titles to read my reviews.)

Today (the post is a bit late), I have the great pleasure of having Denise stop by on my blog to answer some of my questions. Don't forget to leave some comments or questions for her! :)

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and the Immortyl Revolution series?

I currently live in Ohio, but I lived in New York City and the surrounding area for several years. My husband and I have been married for almost 22 years and we have an eighteen-year-old punk rocker son. Most of my series is set in New York, except for book three which takes place mostly in India. Immortyl Revolution is an urban fantasy series about rival groups of vampires competing to capture the secrets of immortality. It has elements of adventure, humour, romance and intrigue. The main characters in the first two books are Mia Disantini and her lover, Kurt Eisen, two vampires who rebel against their masters. The vampires call themselves Immortyls. In book one, Mia sets upon a journey as a female vampire in a very male-dominated world. She’s feisty and sexy and doesn’t give a fig for what she’s supposed to do. In book two, Kurt becomes a charismatic leader of downtrodden teen and child vampires known as sewer rats, and Mia navigates a minefield of politics and romantic rivals to protect him. Book three switches POV to the highly irreverent nineteen-year-old, Cedric MacKinnon. This kid would love to be a rock star, but fate leads him down a very different path. Living on the streets in London, he encounters a vampire named Raj, who takes him to the chief elder of the Immortyl’s court in India, where the boy becomes an adept of the ancient arts, an Immortyl temple artist and courtesan.

How/When did you become interested in writing?

In high school, I wrote comedy sketches and song parodies with a friend of mine, just for fun. In college, I majored in theatre and learned a lot about building characters and dramatic action from acting and analyzing plays. After I graduated from college, I started writing plays, but I didn’t get serious about writing until I was in my thirties. Around the time my son turned two and started to be a bit more independent, I felt a strong urge to do something creative again. I read a lot of Anne Rice around that time, and I always loved vampire stories since I was a little girl and a fan of Dark Shadows on TV. So, I set out to write my own vampire tale. About the same time I started writing Cara Mia, I wrote a play called Attempting Fate. This play was produced during a play festival in New York and subsequently by The Oberon Theatre Ensemble off-off Broadway. When this play was produced, I felt I could finally start calling myself a writer.

Did you learn anything from writing your books?

I learn new things all the time. It’s what keeps a woman of almost fifty years in a youthful state of mind. I tend to plunge myself into subjects that interest me. For my last book it was Indian art and culture. I always strive to be a better writer. I belong to two critique groups. I’ve learned how to take constructive criticism from others and apply it to my work.

If there was one book that you could hold up and say: "This is why I write" – what would it be?

To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. Sometimes a story is more than just a good read, it influences people. This book is so wonderful because it’s not just a terrific story with some of the most memorable characters in American Literature, but also takes racial inequality to task. I read it as a teenager, and it had a profound impact on me. I’m drawn to stories where people battle injustice.

What are some of your favourite books and authors?

Anne Rice will always be my favourite in the vampire genre, but I have to say I also love Richard Matheson’s science fiction vampires in I Am Legend. Both of these authors are an influence on me. I also enjoy Kim Harrison. I’ve always been a big fan of historical fiction by Mary Renault and Robert Graves. They both took historical figures and made them very accessible. Currently my favourite reads seem to be in historical fantasy, like Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint and George R. R. Martin’s Song of Fire and Ice series.

Where is your favourite place to write?

On my living room sofa, with my parrots nearby and a good cup of coffee or glass of Merlot.

What song best matches your books?

Queen’s I Want it All. Adventure seeker, on an empty street, just an alley creeper, light on his feet. A young fighter screaming, with no time for doubt, with the pain and anger, can see his way out… Awesome song. I’ve read this song was inspired by youth uprisings in South Africa during Apartheid. It fits. I think of this all the time when I’m writing Cedric in particular. I’m a huge Queen fan.

When not writing, what do you like to do?

I ride roller coasters with my son and husband. I’ve ridden well over a hundred. We travel around to amusment parks and stop at local restaurants featured on the Food Channel.

Any tips for aspiring writers?

Read everything you can in all fiction genres. Also read non-fiction on all subjects, history, art, politics, fashion, science etc. You never know where the next good story idea will be found. Keep on writing. Work through that first story and share it with a supportive but honest critique group.

Dark Corners Blog Tour : Interview with Liz Schulte

I recently read and reviewed Dark Corners by Liz Schulte. You can read my review here. I absolutely love the book and  I highly recommend you go buy it after reading this interview! :)

Today, I have the great pleasure of interviewing the author, Liz Schulte.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your book, Dark Corners?

I'm a scorpio. I enjoy fine wine and mysterious men . . . wait, is that not what you are looking for? :-) Seriously, other than the obvious writing I like to travel. I have been to around fourteen countries on various vacations. I love animals. I have two dogs (named Whiskey and Rachel) and two cats (named Stewie and Ruth). I am a movie fanatic—especially horror films. While most kids were watching Disney and cartoons, my best friend and I were watching Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. I have always loved to read. I remember when I was a little kid mom would take me to the library and I would pick out the maximum number of books and devour them in two weeks so I could go back. I think I may have read every R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, and L.J. Smith book ever written during that time. But, mostly, I am just a normal girl.

Dark Corners is the product of my love for scary, my degree in psychology, and my fascination with the paranormal. It is a story about a woman on the edge trying to put together the puzzle of her past and present to solve her husband's murder. Where none of the pieces fit and everyone is a suspect, you find yourself needing to know what lurks in the dark.

How did you become interested in writing?

It just sort of happened. One day the idea started to form and build, and I couldn't shake it. So I started writing it down. I have always been an avid reader and very imaginative so I am sure that is part of what sparked writing for me. But now I'm hooked.

Did you learn anything from writing?

I started Dark Corners as a very solitary project that I didn't like to talk about or want people to know about. Through out the process I have learned writing doesn't have to be solitary. There is a huge community of people who are more than willing to help and encourage you.

If there was one book that you could hold up and say: "This is why I write" – what would it be?

I think it would be a Fear Street book, though I can't choose just one. It was in seventh grade when I loved everything Fear Street that I started writing scary short stories because I was so inspired by what I read. I think that is part of what gave me the confidence that I could write an entire book later when the inspiration struck.

What are some of your favourite books and authors?

Jane Austen- Pride and Prejudice, Jim Butcher- Dresden Files, Oscar Wilde- The Importance of Being Ernest, Joseph Heller- Catch-22, Diane Setterfield- Thirteenth Tale, Thomas Harris- Silence of the Lambs, Brett Easton Ellis- American Psycho, Charlotte Bronte- Jane Eyre, William Shakespeare- Hamlet, etc.

Where is your favourite place to write?

In my big, red chair.

What song best match your book?

This is a really hard question. I listened to a lot of Phantom of the Opera while writing it, but none of the songs really fit so I am going to go with- Painted Black by the Rolling Stones. I think the lyrics fit a lot with Ella's emotion state of mind.

When not writing, what do you like to do?

I travel, read, and spend time with my friends and family. I love movies and television. I play trivia once a week and spend times with my dogs.

Any tips for aspiring writers?

Never give up. Find a good critique partner or writing group and make your destiny.

Thanks, Liz!

About the author :

Many authors claim to have known their calling from a young age. Liz Schulte, however, didn't always want to be an author. In fact, she had no clue. Liz wanted to be a veterinarian, then she wanted to be a lawyer, then she wanted to be a criminal profiler. In a valiant effort to keep from becoming Walter Mitty, Liz put pen to paper and began writing her first novel. It was at that moment she realized this is what she was meant to do. As a scribe she could be all of those things and so much more.

When Liz isn’t writing or on social networks she is inflicting movie quotes and trivia on people, reading, traveling, and hanging out with friends and family. Liz is a Midwest girl through and through, though she would be perfectly happy never having to shovel her driveway again. She has a love for all things spooky, supernatural, and snarky. Her favorite authors range from Edgar Allen Poe to Joseph Heller to Jane Austen to Jim Butcher and everything in between.

Liz would love to hear from you and what you thought of Dark Corners.

Review : Dark Corners by Liz Schulte

Title : Dark Corners

Barnes & Noble

Ella Reynolds is in a dark place. She is losing touch with reality more and more everyday. Ella lives as much in her memories as she does in the present. She often drifts back into her own mind and relives the past as the terror of the present becomes overwhelming. Under constant mental strain from living with the murder of her husband and in a house she hates, Ella must look deeper into her past as well as the present to discover the truth. She knew from the first moment she walked into the old home someone or something was watching her. Waiting. A string of uncanny events takes place and practical explanations run thin. As the past and present come to a head, Ella must decipher who or what the murderer is before it takes her as well.

Ella's husband was murdered and now she's living alone in the house she's been hating since she first stepped inside. Ever since that day, she feels like she's being watched. Doors get unlocked by themselves, strange noises can be heard, a creepy neighbor shows up on her doorsteps...Everyone seems to think she's lost her mind and killed her husband. Ella must figure out what is going on inside that house before she becomes a victim like her husband.

You can't help but feel pain for Ella. She's been suffering ever since her husband's death. She doesn't socialize with others and finds refuge in alcohol.

Schulte does a great job at keeping the readers guessing. At times I was sure Ella was just plain crazy and sometimes I believed her. I had no clue who or what was causing all that trouble. The ending left me truly surprised.

Dark Corners reminded me of Paranormal Activity. This is one of the few books I've read that I truly found scary. I can guarantee you'll be on the edge of your seat. I'd recommend not reading this book in the middle of the night like I did. You might find yourself jumping at every little noise in your house!

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!

Blog Tour : Giveaway : Delicate Freakn' Flower by Eve Langlais

Dammit , just how many toes was she going to have to stomp on before people realized she was a delicate freakin’ flower?

Naomi doesn’t want to follow tradition and settle down with a violence-loving, chest thumping shapeshifter. She grew up in a household with five, testosterone laden brothers where none of the dishes ever matched, the ugly-as-sin furniture could withstand any catastrophe, and where crazy glue was bought by the case.

When fate—with a snicker—makes her meet not one, but two mates, Naomi digs her heels in and refuses to do what her wolf—and her body—demands. No way is she voluntarily allowing herself to get hitched to a pair of dumbass—totally hot and muscled—lacrosse players.

Can Ethan, the towering Kodiak bear, and Javier, the sexy, tanned jaguar convince this she-wolf that life with them won’t be all chaos? And can this delicate freakn’ flower unbend her prejudices enough to recognize she needs a pair of men who can handle her thorns—and her passion?

REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: A Time To Lie by D.W. Hardin

Cover for 'A Time To Lie'

Title : A Time To Lie
Author : D.W. Hardin
Published July 9th by BlackWyrm publishing

Officer John Drake is involved in a shooting that killed his partner, Frank.  There were no witnesses except for the guy that flew the scene. John is immediately suspected of killing Officer Frank.  The only guy he shot at was the guy holding the revolver. Everyone, including the mayor and a news reporter, thinks he is guilty of murdering a police officer.  With someone seeking revenge, John and his family are in danger. With a few people on his side, John is determined to prove his innocence and possibly catch Frank's killer.

Tragedy does help people become closer. I enjoyed reading how the characters relationships evolved with each chapter. John was separated from his wife for two months before the shooting. But now they're living together again along with their child, Amy. John's relationship with his dad also improves throughout the book.

Every character, especially the main ones, are so well written that you feel like you're a part of their lives. I definitely felt John's pain and wanted to scream at everyone in the book 'Can't you see he's innocent!'. From the first few pages, I was rooting for him.

A Time To Lie is a captivating novel filled with love, trust, politics, gangs... It is one of my top picks for favorite books read this year. I couldn't put it down!
Douglas Hardin proves he's a wonderfully talented author and one to keep an eye on.

A highly recommended read!

REVIEW : My Fearful Symmetry by Denise Verrico

Title : My Fearful Symmetry (Book Three of the Immortyl Revolution)
Author : Denise Verrico
Published June 8th 2011

Only the most gifted and beautiful Immortyls are chosen to serve Mother Kali as adepts of the ancient arts...
For nineteen-year-old Cedric MacKinnon, the promise of eternal youth and celebrity sounds like a dream come true. It becomes a nightmare when a master vampire plucks the boy from the London streets and spirits him away to India. In the fabled ashram of the adepts of the ancient arts, Cedric undergoes the grueling process of training as a temple dancer and courtesan. With the threat of revolution hanging over court, the chief elder employs the boy he names Shardul in dangerous games of seduction and intrigue. Hated by the chief's mistress and abused by those he entertains, Cedric struggles with visions of a violent destiny that seem to come from Kali herself. The stakes are heightened when the rebel leader, Loki, is brought to India for trial and Cedric is forced to choose between the protection and patronage of a powerful elder and his love for a beautiful female adept.

*E-book courtesy of the author

Cedric is one of the many who live on the street and engage in prostitution in order to survive.  He's ashamed of what he does and would like to get a real job.  But then, tragedy strikes. Cedric is diagnosed with AIDS and fights to stay alive but his days are numbered. Cedric is then "saved" by a man who turns him into a vampire. From that moment on, Cedric's life will never be the same...

Cedric probably has to be one of my favorite characters in all the three books in the Immortyl Revolution series. He suffered quite a lot in the streets of London and thought his suffering would all end when he became a creature of the night. You can't help but feel bad for Cedric. I was rooting for him to get a happy ending.

My Fearful Symmetry is my favorite book in this series so far. From the first few pages I was hooked and couldn't stop turning the pages to find out more about Cedric.

I recommend this book to anyone looking for a great read with a new take on vampires.

Twilight of the Gods

Title : Twitlight of the Gods (Book Two of the Immortyl Revolution series)
Author : Denise Verrico
Published September 28th 2010 by L & L Dreamspell

Vampire lovers Mia and Kurt are on the run from their Forbidden Science rival Gaius Lupus.

After narrowly escaping the implosion of Genpath Laboratories, Immortyls Mia Disantini and Kurt Eisen go into hiding in a place they think is safe. All too soon they are discovered, and Kurt is captured by Gaius.

When he's rescued with the aid of feral child and teen vampires known as sewer rats, Mia witnesses first-hand the charismatic spell her lover casts over these would-be revolutionaries, who vow to join Kurt in his mission to bring down the house of Gaius.

Meeting obstacles to government funding to support the research that will one day allow them to walk in the sun, Kurt builds his forces. Mia navigates the minefield of rat politics, where she is distressed to be shunted into the background; viewed merely as an overly ambitious concubine who stands between the beloved "Loki" and his followers. One in particular-the oddly timid but beautiful Arturo, who threatens to sever the deep bond between Mia and Kurt.

Will Kurt and Mia defeat Gaius's brutal attacks and realize their dream of a cure for their condition? Will the new order they establish survive betrayal from within? And...will their love adapt to the challenge of a third partner?

*E-book courtesy of the author

Mia and Kurt's adventures continue in Twilight of the Gods, the second book of the Immortyl Revolution series.  Both vampires have escaped the lab and are on the run from their enemy. They've enlisted the help of rats to help them take down Gaius Lupin.  Mia and Kurt are still madly in love with each other but now Kurt has a new lover, a guy named Arturo.

Both main characters grow and become stronger in this book while their relationship is pushed to its limits.

The new characters introduced  are well written and the author gives us many details throughout the book.

Since Twilight of the Gods starts where the first one ended, I'd recommend you read the books in order. This second book in a series is even more fast-paced than the first one. There's a lot more action and we get to learn even more about the wonderful world of Immortyls. A must-read series!

4 stars!!

REVIEW : Cara Mia by Denise Verrico

Cara Mia - Book One of the Immortyl Revolution

Title : Cara Mia (Book One of the Immortyl Revolution)
Author : Denise Verrico
Published January 1st 2010 by L & L Dreamspell (first published 2009)
Blurb:

Vampires Mia and Kurt become involved in a deadly mission to harness the power of immortality. Mia Disantini is a vampire whose greatest desire is to walk in the sun again. She is enslaved by her charismatic master, Ethan, and plunged into an ancient, unenlightened Immortyl culture. As Mia struggles for the freedom to live as she chooses, she is trained as Ethan's Bird of Prey. Soon she becomes the pawn of their powerful, enigmatic elder, Brovik, in his deadly games of deception and intrigue against his rival, Gaius, concerning their forbidden science experiments. When Mia is cast out by Ethan she joins forces with Kurt, and together the lovers steal fire from the gods and deliver it to Genpath Laboratories. The company CEO Lee Brooks deceives and imprisons the pair. While held captive, Mia calls upon the aid of Dr. Joe Ansari. The couple is hunted for their crime and time is running out. Will Mia and Kurt escape with their lives and succeed in their mission before their Immortyl enemies harness the power of immortality for evil purposes?

*E-book courtesy of the author

The first book of the Immortyl series, Cara Mia, is about  two vampire lovers, Mia and Kurt, who are (voluntary) in an experimental lab under the care of Joe.  His job consists of finding out everything he can about vampires. Through flashbacks, Mia shares her life story, starting from before she was turned.

In Cara Mia, we are introduced to a new kind of vampires and their Immortyl world. The book takes us on an adventure filled with love, betrayal and twists and turns.

Denise Verrico has crafted a wonderful and exciting book. She makes sure the reader gets as much detail as possible. Although, I have to admit, I sometimes lost interest in the book because nothing was really happening but I still managed to follow the story and enjoy it.

4 stars!!
